Over the years media has had an impact in sport with the way its played for entertainment purposes. Its happened in sports such as football and cricket. The rules have changed because the viewers at home and those who are there at the games want to see more attacking play in both sports where they feel they are getting their moneys worth.
In football, one of the rules changed is the offside trap: The linesman used to give the benefit of the doubt to the defending team, however these days they give the decisions more to the attacking team. This affects the game in the sense that the forwards would stay right on the last man because when the ball gets played through to them they know if there in line or a part of their body which they cant score with such as their arms then the linesman will give the benefit to the attacker. This will make games for entertaining for the public, which will increase the amount of tickets sold or sky sports packages which therefore will make them more money as buisnesses. Another part of football which has changed is the back pass; where before the rule changed goal keepers were allowed to pick the ball up from a back pass however now they aren't allowed to pick it up and have six seconds to distribute the ball. This has increased the speed of the game from a few decades ago with the aim to become a fast attacking game.

In cricket, twenty-20 matches didn’t occur till 2003. This format of the game has brought a lot of money and entertainment to the sport. With only having 20 overs to bat, the fans want big 6's and 4's flying round the ground. With the introduction of the fielding restrictions for the first 6 overs known as a 'power play' and only being allowed just 2 fielders outside the inner ring in that period, brings a huge demand for an entertaining and big hitting opening start to the innings. This format became so successful and that entertaining the 'Indian Premier League' was created in India with originally 9 teams however now 11 teams, with all clubs having roughly between 65 - 115 million dollars each to attract the best players to play for them with the aim of winning the massive (10 crores) or roughly 1.35 million pound jackpot. ITV 4 show the IPL matches so it is actually free for English viewers which is good for the game because its brilliant entertainment. Although sky have the rights to the English twenty20 cup tournament and the coverage of the Ashes and other test series; resulting in revenue from live coverage of games, highlights and the advertisement of them. However, this causes class inequality because not everyone can afford sky who want to watch the sport.
